Basketball and Athletics in PE

Last week, Year 4 focused on athletics, taking part in a range of indoor and outdoor lessons to develop their core skills. Students worked on improving their javelin and shot put techniques, concentrating on body positioning and control to enhance accuracy and distance.

In jumping activities such as the speed bounce and long jump, students developed their rhythm, timing, and landing technique, helping to build coordination and agility. They particularly enjoyed the relay races, where the use of reverse boards added an extra challenge and required strong communication and teamwork.

The week concluded with endurance running, allowing students to build stamina and resilience while learning how to pace themselves effectively over longer distances.

Overall, it was a productive week that supported students in strengthening their athletic skills and confidence.

Year 4 have also revisited basketball this week, with lessons focusing on developing both shooting and dribbling skills. Students have been practising a variety of shooting drills aimed at improving control, accuracy, and correct technique. They have been encouraged to consider their body position, hand placement, and follow-through to support more consistent shooting.

Dribbling has been another key area of focus. Students have explored different dribbling styles, learning when and how to use them effectively during play. This has included practising changes of speed, direction, and height of the bounce to maintain control while moving around opponents.

Alongside the practical elements, students have been introduced to key basketball terminology to help broaden their understanding of the sport. This vocabulary work has supported them in recognising specific actions, tactics, and rules during game situations.

To further develop their game
play knowledge, students have also been learning simple strategies to make themselves less predictable on the court. This has included practising fakes, feints, and changes in movement to create space and opportunities for themselves and their teammates.

Overall, this combination of skill development, tactical understanding, and vocabulary work has helped students gain greater confidence and competence in basketball.
