Spring Term - Year 4 - Tennis & Inclusive Sports
Year 4 have enthusiastically embraced this half-term’s new focus in PE. During this part of the term, we have been concentrating on tennis as well as a range of inclusive sports, encouraging students to develop both their physical skills and their understanding of teamwork and accessibility in sport.
For the past two weeks, tennis has been our main focus. The lessons have centred on developing key fundamental skills such as hand-eye coordination, movement and positioning on the court, and learning how to work effectively with the net. To build strong foundations, students initially practised these skills without racquets, allowing them to concentrate on controlling the ball and understanding how it travels. As their confidence has grown, we have gradually introduced racquets, with students learning how to control the ball using proper wrist movement, grip, and racquet handling. This has helped them begin to understand the importance of control, accuracy, and technique in tennis.
Alongside tennis, we have also been exploring inclusive sports, with a particular focus on team games. Students have been developing their understanding of netball, practising a range of essential skills and techniques, including different types of passes and how to move effectively as part of a team. These activities have helped to strengthen communication, cooperation, and tactical thinking.
We have also introduced adapted and creative variations of traditional games, such as football rounders. These modified activities encourage participation from all students and help them see how sports can be adjusted so that everyone can be involved and enjoy physical activity.
Overall, Year 4 have been very proactive and engaged, showing great enthusiasm while gaining valuable insight into the many ways sport can be made inclusive and accessible for all. At the same time, they are continuing to strengthen their core sporting foundations in games such as netball and tennis. It has been wonderful to see their confidence and teamwork grow. Great work, Year 4!
